1953
Zambia’s First Power Utility
The first power utility in Zambia, Rhodesia-Congo Border Power Corporation, was established to service the Rhodesia Copperbelt Province, marking the beginning of industrial-scale energy infrastructure in the region. It laid the foundation for reliable power supply critical to mining activities.
1956
Pioneer of Regional Interconnection
Became the first utility in Southern Africa to own and operate an interconnector, pioneering regional energy integration. This achievement set a precedent for cross-border energy trading and collaboration in the region.
1964
Renamed as Copperbelt Power Company (CPC)
Renamed Copperbelt Power Company (CPC) to reflect its focus on the Copperbelt, Zambia’s mining heartland. The name change symbolized its evolving role in supporting Zambia’s industrial growth.
1986
Integration into ZCCM Power Division
CPC was dissolved and integrated into ZCCM as its Power Division, consolidating operations under the state mining conglomerate. This transition aimed to streamline energy management across Zambia’s mining sector.
1997
Birth of Copperbelt Energy Corporation
Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) was born following the privatization of ZCCM Power Division, marking a new era of private energy management. This change positioned CEC as a key player in Zambia’s power sector, driving innovation and efficiency.
2008
First Utility Listed on LuSE
Became the first power utility to list on the Lusaka Securities Exchange (LuSE), enhancing corporate transparency and public ownership. This milestone increased investor confidence and underscored CEC’s commitment to good governance.
2009
Joining Southern African Power Pool
Achieved a milestone as the first private utility to become a full member of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), strengthening regional collaboration. This membership enabled CEC to participate in Southern Africa’s integrated energy market.
2016
Second Interconnector to the DRC
Commissioned its second interconnector to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), expanding cross-border energy trade. This project reinforced Zambia’s role as a regional energy hub in Southern Africa.
2018
Incorporation of CEC-DRC SARL
Incorporated CEC-DRC Sarl to support operations in the DRC, reinforcing its commitment to regional energy solutions. The subsidiary enhanced CEC’s operational efficiency and service delivery in the DRC.
2018
First Grid-Connected Solar Plant
Commissioned its first grid-connected Solar PV Plant, stepping into renewable energy generation. This move marked CEC’s dedication to diversifying energy sources and promoting sustainability.
2022
Launch of CEC Renewables
Launched CEC Renewables as a dedicated vehicle for implementing renewable energy projects, signaling a strong pivot toward sustainable energy. This initiative was aimed at addressing growing energy demands while reducing environmental impact.
2023
Riverside Solar Plant Commissioned
Commissioned the 33.1 MWp Riverside Solar Plant, contributing significantly to Zambia’s renewable energy capacity. This development showcased CEC’s leadership in transitioning to clean energy solutions.
2024
Zambia’s First Green Bond Issued
Successfully listed Zambia’s first Green Bond on the LuSE, a landmark achievement in sustainable finance. The initiative highlighted CEC’s innovative approach to financing green energy projects.
2024
Itimpi Solar Plant Commissioned
Commissioned the 60 MWp Itimpi Solar Plant, underscoring its leadership in solar energy development in the region. This plant further strengthened Zambia’s renewable energy infrastructure and energy security.
